Putting The Harry Potter Into Boarding Schools

For those of you considering sending your child to a British boarding school, here is a bit of information about what your child might expect to find. Most boarding schools in England require a fee to be paid for board and the often superior teaching that goes on within the classes (class sizes can be a lot smaller than in normal education allowing the tutor to give each child more attention).

Children that board at school are alloted housemasters/mistresses that look after their general wellbeing and ensure that the schools rules and regulations are followed. Students need to be given permission by either there house master/mistress to leave the school premises. Popularised through the great story Harry Potter with its separate house names of Griffyndor and Slytherin houses provide the children with a group to belong to providing for fun competition within the school.

Most independent schools (boarding schools in England), have facilities such as dining areas, kitchens, study bedrooms, library and common rooms. Most of the time food is taken at set times in the day, with special provision provided when outings or school events are happening. Schools normally work a head boy or girl scheme where individuals are put in a position of monitored responsibility and help organize other students promoting individual responsibility and good networking skills.

Most UK boarding schools as previously mentioned have smaller class sizes to allow the tutor to provide a better service to the children. Students that board at the schools have a tendency to have extra curricular activities that can sometimes run until they go to bed, such as going to see a play, dance or orchestra, sporting events, discussion groups or extended studies. Some schools have specialized into their respective areas be it sport or dyslexia in children. Due to the age of some of the boarding schools in England you will find that many of them have small chapels for religious individuals to take prayer. Many have music-rooms, tennis courts, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres and provide the opportunity to partake in outdoor pursuits.
