Harry Potter Lego Review 2010 - Hogwarts Castle Set 4842

Harry Potter finally made its return to Lego in 2010, after five years of absence in which it was sorely missed by fans. With six sets in the initial wave, the largest and most distinctive is the iconic building, Hogwarts Castle.

Lego has produced 3 previous versions of the famous castle over the years (interestingly coming out every 3 years from 2001 onwards) but this latest one is without a doubt the definitive version. At 1290 pieces and with 10 minifigures it is the largest Harry Potter Lego set ever, having almost double the amount of pieces as the original castle.

New figures in this set include Professor Flitwick and Argus Filch (along with his creepy cat Mrs Norris). Other figures include Lord Voldemort, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and two Dementors.

Rather than having the set coming from one film, it seems to cover a few different films. For example, it features appearances from "He Who Must Not Be Named", who only came to Hogwarts in the final book, as well as a tile featuring Sirius in the fire (from the fourth film). Other notable features include a printed Sorting Hat, Gryffindor's Sword (silver!), a Basilisk fang, Harry's invisibility cloak, sliding stairs and too many more to mention.

There are features aplenty in this set and, for true fans of Lego and Harry Potter, an amazing amount of unique printed pieces. Notable amongst them - a copy of The Marauder's Map, The Daily Prophet ("Mass Breakout From Azkaban"), The Qubblier ("Harry Potter Speaks Out At Last") and the Hogwarts Crest.

While there are a number of great printed parts there are also stickers (but not too many) including ones for a shield featuring the name of Harry's father, James, as Gryffindor Seeker and the Slytherin and Gryffindor great hall hangings. The school owls and Mrs Norris all come with fully painted faces as does the Sorting Hat and many of the figures some with full torso printing, leg printing and/or double sided head pieces.

Rooms include Dumbledore's office, the restricted section of the library, the Room of Requirement (featuring a vanishing cabinet), the astronomy tower, Slytherin and Gryffindor common rooms and of course the Great Hall complete with food and seating areas.

Honestly there is so much playability in this set and Harry Potter fans will go crazy over the amount of detail the designers have put into this latest (and last?) castle. Lego have really outdone themselves here and set 4842 is well worth the $129 price tag. I imagine this set will sell like Chocolate Frogs.

A Mythological and Archetypal Approach to "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by JK Rowling

The first installment in the series of Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, can be analyzed through the various archetypes and myths present in the novel.

To begin with, let us look into the so-called heroic quest of Harry. As the story unfolds, Harry goes through the classic and mythic stages of a hero's journey. First to these is a call to adventure. In the story, Harry receives the letters from Hogwarts. Second is a separation from the known world. This is seen in the part where Harry leaves for Hogwarts. Third is an initiation into the new world. This is evident in the Sorting ceremony, where Harry undergoes a placement-like ritual through the Sorting Hat. Next is the presence of threats which can be observed in Harry's rivalry with Malfoy and also his encounter with the Mirror of Erised - both of which tried Harry's character and desires. Another is the existence of a fellowship which can be justified by the characters of Ron and Hermione. The guidance of a mentor, through Hagrid and Dumbledore, the final confrontation with darkness - Harry versus Voldemort over the stone - Afterwhich, comes a rebirth or resurrection through Harry's victory over Voldemort and finally, the hero's return to the old world - Harry returns to his home, but this time he knows who he really is.

The Sorcerer's stone or what is also known as the Philosopher's stone is a traditional element from mythology that appears in Rowling's work. In the story, the stone was created by Nicolas Falmal, Dumbledore's partner, whose character is actually based on the history and legends surrounding thr real French alchemist Nicolas Flamel. The stone, both in the novel and in the field of alchemy, is described as a small red ball that can turn metal into gold and can also create an elixir that can grant eternal life.

The character of Lord Voldemort clearly illustrates the power of fear throughout the novel. In fact, most wizards, except Dumbledore, dare not refer to him by name. Instead, he is referred to as, 'He Who must Not Be Named'. In this manner, Voldemort is taken as a metaphor for fear, which is a common element of mankind.

Most of the names of the characters in the novel have relevant meanings. One example is Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. His first name is derived from the Latin word alba which means 'white'. His last name is old English for 'bumblebee'. In symbolism, white stands fro purity, so the headmaster's name suggests honor and a hard-working nature. Another example is Professor Severus Snape. Severus is the Latin word fro 'severe' and 'strict' - adjectives that can truly be associated to the professor's character.

In Harry Potter, there are four Hogwarts houses. Gryffindor is the Hogwarts house to which Harry and his friends belong. Gryffindor is derived from Griffin, which means a fierce, legendary beast with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. And that is why this Hogwarts house uses a lion as its symbol. On the other hand, Slytherin, Gryffindor's rival house, is actually a variation of 'slithering' a method of travel for snakes, the very reason perhaps why its symbol is a serpent.

In terms of archetypal men, Dumbledore is what we call, The Chief. He is a leader of wizards, highly-respected and he looks over his subjects very well. The Bad Boy, no doubt, is Voldemort. And we can also say that Ron's character is fit to be the best friend archetype. In archetypal women, The Boss can be associated to Deputy Headmistress McGonagall due to first, her position in the school and next, her wise character. Hermione's character, on the other hand, can be classified as The Librarian archetype. She has answers for almost any question because she has read a great deal of books and she can also be fierce, once provoked.

Overall, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is one great novel that captured the hearts of both young and old alike for its myths and archetypes that bind all the readers together all over the world.

Another toy that is fun to play but also very clever is the Hogwarts Lego board game. Eight year old girls are no doubt fans of the Harry Potter series of movies or maybe have even read the books. Well, the Lego board game is a fun way to get even more out of the Harry Potter story.

Up to 4 people can play and they have to get various pieces of homework to the common room (or center of the board). Players can block other players off by casting spells that seal walls to halt and opponents progress. It's good fun for girls devoted to the Harry Potter story and keen to be a part of the venerable old Hogwarts school.

Another toy that is fun for the whole family but certainly some that young girls would like to play with is the Kinect sensor for Xbox 360. Of course you need an Xbox 360 for the Kinect sensor to work but after that you are good to go.

You can get games, like Kinectimals which allows you to have a virtual pet. A gorgeous tiger cub is demonstrated. As the sensor responds to all your movements you can play with your pet animals - tickle his chin or stroke his head. He will purr or jump up and try to lick you.

It looks like great fun and sure to be a popular game with girls around 8 years of age and even older or younger.

Radcliffe then continued to say that he's sure JK will be writing more books in the Potter world -- just that she knew Harry's adventure would end with the 7th and final novel. My cousin Tyler was picked to receive a wand at Ollivanders at Islands of Adventures Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The neat thing is all of the seemingly random coincidences. Tyler is 11, The same age as Harry Potter when he was told he was a Wizard and given a wand by Ollivander. Tyler also has a scar on his forehead, granted it wasn't given to him by a curse from the dark Lord Voldemort it was given to him by a pretty scary dog. Who knows maybe it was THE GRIM!!!!

I'm Dana Ward chilling at the ClevverTV studio. Welcome back to Harry Potter week! ... So it was an exciting midnight showing for the first installment of Deathly Hallows -- earning 24-million bucks. Impressive sales indeed, but the one figure that actually broke box office records was HP's 1.4-million in sales at IMAX theatres. You muggles did a good job. Moving on to the Part One review. Fans of the book series might be happy to hear that this flick does a good job of re-telling the first half of the book, exactly as expected, and it especially keeps with the dark, desperate situation for our main trio, as they seek out to destroy the horcruxes which are protecting Voldemort's soul. We think Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all played their closely followed characters extremely well, especially as the story shows them in a more mature, grown up, intellectual light. In fact, it was interesting to see a different side to the Ron Weasley we've come to know through the franchise. But even with the character development, there's some intense action as the evil lord is hot on the trail of HP and crew, wanting to battle to the bloody end and causing destruction for everyone in his path.
