Lego - A History Of These Building Blocks Of Imagination

Lego bricks. Creativity. Childhood. They go together like Mickey Mouse and Disney, wizards and Harry Potter. Lego has been a part of childhood for more than three generations. Nearly everyone under 50 has played with these building blocks of imagination. There is no telling how many engineers and scientists were spawned by these plastic building blocks.

Lego is synonymous with plastic toy bricks that can be easily transformed into buildings, space ships, cars, boats, trains and a myriad of other toys. The key is that the child gets to assemble the toy from the basic building blocks. Each toy can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled in enough new shapes and forms to tickle the imagination and stretch the youngster's creativity.

Today, Lego is much more that the simple blocks invented in 1949. It is toys, theme parks, movies, and CDs. Lego building blocks and other products are distributed around the world. These tiny plastic bricks and the company they have built, are a phenomenon with a success as remarkable as Mickey Mouse.

Lego Bricks Become The Building Blocks Of Fantasy

Where did Lego come from and how did it get to be such an important tool for childhood creativity?

Our story begins in Billund, Denmark. It is 1932. Master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Kristiansen opened a new business. His little company makes stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. He has just six employees. Nobody could have imagined, but Lego and the little building blocks of imagination had just been born.

Two years later, Kristiansen adopted the name Lego as a brand name for his toys. The name is derived from the Danish words "leg godt," which mean "play well." Ironically, he later discovered that Lego in Latin means "I put together." Lego has truly come to mean "put together" and "play well" in virtually every language. At this time, all of the company's toys were being made from wood.

In 1942, the Lego factory burned to the ground. Kristiansen rebuilt.

In 1947, the Lego Company became the first company in Denmark to buy an injection-molding machine. It began making plastic toy dolls and other toys. The famous bricks were yet to be invented.

It was not until 1949 that the Lego company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, a little plastic brick, some with four studs and some with eight. At this time, the company was producing about 200 different plastic toys. The Automatic Binding Brick was sold exclusively in Denmark.

By 1950, plastic toys became half of the company's business. Ole Kirk's son, Godtfred Kirk, who had worked in the company since age 12, was appointed junior vice president at age 30.

In 1954, Godtfred Kirk made a trip to England to meet with a purchasing agent. The purchasing agent told Kristiansen that he thought the Automatic Binding Bricks lacked an idea and system. Godtfred returned to Denmark. The Lego System was developed.
The following year, Godtfred introduced the Lego System at a toy fair in Germany. It was the first time it was introduced outside of Denmark. The results were disappointing. Kristiansen did not give up. Later that year, the Lego System Play was developed. It was an improved system for the Lego bricks. The Lego System Play was exported to Sweden, where it sold well.

In 1959, Lego bricks and the Lego System were introduced in Great Britain, France, and Belgium.

It wasn't until 1961 that Lego bricks were first marketed in the U.S. and Canada. They were an immediate hit and distribution around the world continued. By the end of that decade, 843 people in Billund worked for the Lego company. The first Legoland film was produced. In 1969, the DUPLO system for children under age five was introduced.

By 1970, there were almost 1,000 employees at the plant in Billund.

In 1980, the Educational Products Department was established. The DUPLO Rabbit logo was introduced and a survey showed that 70 percent of all Western European families with children under age 14 had Lego in their home.

As 1990 unfolded, the Lego Group had become one of the world's 10 largest toy manufacturers and the only toy company of that size in Europe. The others were in Japan and the U.S. More than one million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park and Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen celebrated his 70th birthday. Lego Publishing was renamed Lego Licensing and the LEGOLAND Band issued an LP.

With the beginning of the new century, LEGO continues to grow. It has also continued to remain a family owned company. These days, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of Ole Kirk, runs the company.

In 2003, a record 1.63 million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park in Billund. The Lego mini-figure celebrated its 25th birthday and the BIONICLE film "Mask of Light" was released to great success. Representations of the Lego mini-figures Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust are the first earthlings to reach the planet Mars onboard the NASA Mars rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity." The Lego Education Center in Shanghai opened. The concept was aimed at children from age three to age twelve. There are more than 80 Lego Education Centers in Korea alone. http://www.lego.com receives around four million visitors per month.

Lego bricks are more than just building blocks. They are learning toys. They build on favorite themes and children's stories and allow the child to exercise his or her own imagination and creativity. Offshoots of the basic brick include such toys as Lego Robotics, Star Wars Lego, Harry Potter Legos and many other building toys and kids' games. It is truly amazing what a few bricks and a full measure of imagination will produce.

JOSLYN: I am totally on team Hermione, so in my opinion Lavender doesn't fit in at all-the only good thing about her is that she probably helps these two love birds realize how much they really care. Hornby Model Trains

Hornby model trains are found primarily in England and Germany. It is one of the most popular model trains to be found anywhere. Almost all of the millions of model train hobbyists worldwide are familiar with the Hornby name.

The unique nature of Hornby trains has made them a favorite of collectors everywhere. The old trains from the start of the 20th century are expensive to collect, but are like gold to a knowledgeable model train collector.

Hornby models were originally known for their distinct attention to detail. The old tinplate models are much more true to this standard than the Hornby trains produced by manufacturers today. Collectors love the older models because the reproductions of actual trains were the best that could be found.

When plastic trains became the standard, Hornby struggled to compete with other manufacturers. Through buyouts and acquisitions, the train line survived far past many of the other producers of the early days.

During the late 1960's, Hornby introduced the pre-Nationalisation liveries for steam locomotives, and during the same period launched the Battle Space and Battle Zone. During this era, the E3000, Hall Class, Coronation Class, Hymek, M7, Class 37, Flying Scotsman, and the Evening Star became popular.

During the 1970's, the Footballer, King, Duchess Classes, Patriot, and A4 were introduced. The High Speed Train from this era became an instant success. In addition, new coaches were introduced which were popular for many years. A live steam model of Stephenson's Rocket was manufactured that preceded DCC models.

In 1986, Hornby became a public company, Hornby Hobbies, Ltd. A lot of retooling took place in this era along with the introduction of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, based on a television show. Other new models of that era included Mk4 Inter City coaches, and Class 90 and 91 locomotives.

In 1995, Hornby moved its manufacturing division to China and introduced the Far East model, a rebuilt Merchant Navy Class locomotive. This train was followed in 2003 by the first commercial OO gauge live steam locomotive.

It is possible to use the same gauge track for the OO as the HO scale model train. Because of this, some modelers say the OO is out of scale. The OO train is so much fun to work with, however, most hobbyists are not overly concerned with any inaccuracies in the design.

Hornby produces the Skaledale product line, which consists of track and building accessories for the OO scale of trains. Lyddle End is another range of buildings made by Hornby for the N scale model. Buildings in the Lyddle End line are made from die cast resin. The buildings are primarily designed to resemble structures from the Great Western Railway.

Hornby introduced the Lyddle End products based on the large success of the Skaledale line. A large number of the buildings are the same in both lines except for the scale variation. This saved the company the cost for a totally new product design.

Today, Hornby Model Trains produces more than 650 items. Their 2009 catalog boasts the addition of 250 newly introduced products. Their product line offers:

o Lighting and accessories
o Trees, grass, and gravel
o Exceptionally detailed vehicles
o Landscaping materials (lichen, scatter, ballast, scenic mats)
o Buildings and accessories
o Power supplies, controllers, wheels, and couplings
o Track and accessories

It remains, as it has for the last fifty years, the top model train company in England. Unlike many of the old time model manufacturers, Hornby was able to adapt with changes in its production methods and the buyer's market to remain a viable company in the industry.

There's a kiss thrown in there - not the one we're all waiting to see though, there's a blowout between Potter and Ron and we seem some emotional turmoil for Potter... and the last voice we hear says to HP, 'you really don't stand a chance.' The Houses at Hogwarts

If one character has defined literature of the last decade or so, then it has to be J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. And with a major portion of Harry's life and adventures being unraveled at his school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it is quite obvious that there has been an increasing interest among the readers to learn and remember more about the institute and the ways in which it functions. An integral part to the school is the various houses that the students are camped into. Following is a brief write-up highlighting the major features of the houses in the Harry Potter series.

The Names

There are four houses in all and each is named after its founder. They are,

Gryffindor after Godric Gryffindor,
Slytherin after Salazar Slytherin,
Ravenclaw after Rowena Ravenclaw and
Hufflepuff aafter Helga Hufflepuff

Students of a year group will share the same dormitory and classroom.

The Sorting Hat

The sorting of students into respective houses is a very important event and takes place during the Sorting Ceremony at the beginning of each school year. And the event is fantasy at its best. What happens is that a hat, the Sorting Hat is placed on op of each student's head and it is the hat which decides, or at least declares, which house the student will go to. As the events have unfolded in the various volumes of the series, it can be suggested though the h at can choose for a student, if the student has a stronger liking for some other house, then that choice is accepted. It is only for those who are not informed or are not sure, that the hat decides unilaterally.

The Rivalry

The houses, like any other modern present day school, are famous for their rivalries. And this is at its best and most evident during the Quidditch matches and the annual inter-house competition for the House Cup. In this event, each member of a house earns or loses point for his or her house, and the one with the highest aggregate emerge as the winners. Not only is it an issue of prestige and pride but often team members stoop to levels of cheating and treachery to win. This shows how important the event is to the members of the rival houses.

Characters of the Houses

Each of the houses stands for certain values and bears an animal emblem.

Courage and boldness are the values of Gryffindor and lion is its animal emblem.

Slytherin values ambition the snake being its emblem.

Ravenclaw values intelligence and the emblematic animal for the house is the raven.

Hufflepuff values hardwork with the badger being its emblem.

With a name like that, you can't help but think maybe this is a beefed up, funny version of Harry Potter, but sorry guys, that's wrong... except the comedy part, of course. It's a British film, based on a book, and brought to us from the director of 'Bend It Like Beckham' and 'Bride and Prejudice' and it's already been quite popular overseas... So breaking down the actual teen movie, 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' follows a 14-year-old girl named Georgia - played by Georgia Groome - going through the normal trials and tribulations of teenage life. She seems to find sanctuary with her cat, Angus as well as with her group of friends, interestingly named 'The Ace Gang.' Basically, Georgia has two big life goals as this point: to win a hot boyfriend and to throw the biggest 15th birthday party ever. Great Moments In Hardy Boys History

Long before reading was fundamental or Harry Potter and Captain Underpants burst onto the scene with magic and scatological humor (respectively), there were The Hardy Boys - the well-groomed, good-natured, parent-friendly siblings who attracted heinous crimes like Curious George attracts malfunctioning candy factories.

First authored by Leslie MacFarlane (and then by a legion of ghostwriters), the Hardys have become a world-wide phenomenon in their 80-plus years of existence.

Here are a few great and not so great moments from the history of the Hard Boys:

The Tower Treasure released

Even now, cynical and crusty at the age of 54, seeing the cover of this book gives me goose bumps. It was cool then and it's cool now. In a preview of themes from just about every book in the series, The Tower Treasure begins with the boys chasing a stranger who is up to no good and ends with the somewhat death-defying hope that "another mystery would soon come their way." And indeed it did. The 57 volumes that followed would represent the canon of classic Hardy Boys mysteries, as well as one of the greatest selling literary series of all time.

The boys go "PC"

After 1959, editors, concerned about the rather WASPy nature of the lead characters, gave Frank and Joe a couple of ethnic sidekicks to help out the crew in a more socially acceptable way. Young readers growing up in Middle America were now exposed to the Italian and Jewish cultures via new side-kick characters Tony Prito and Phil Cohen. Elie Weisel it wasn't, but it still represented an admirable effort, during that time, to expose young minds to different American cultures.

Giving birth to a genre

The success of the Hardy Boys paved the way for additional popular youth-oriented titles. The Hardy's original publisher, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, went on to sell tens of millions of copies of The Bobsey Twins, Tom Swift, and of course Joe and Frank's female counterpart, Nancy Drew (with whom the Boys would team up in countless popular stories over the years).

The Boys become a world-wide phenomenon

As of 2007, The Hardy Boys have been translated into over 25 different languages, including Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Russian and Japanese - thus proving the universal appeal of a sinister figure, a hidden key and a creaky grandfather clock.

An important place in education

Perhaps the most prominent place the Hardy Boys hold in history is that they have kick-started a love of reading with generations of boys. In a world where boys lag significantly behind girls in reading skills, these simple mystery books geared towards young males have stood out like beacon. One can only imagine how many great students and authors have achieved success thanks to their entry - via the Hardy Boys - into the world of reading. There's no denying their place as one of the best literary on-ramps for young men who have gone on to bigger and better things.

What does the future hold for the frères Hardy? One can only hope that, like Lincoln Logs and Raggedy Ann, this is a timeless childhood classic that will never truly go away - even in the face of PlayStation 6's or Virtual Rubik cubes. The Hardy Boys are a classic, and classics never go out of style.

Movies are indeed very popular and movie characters become icons on their own right. One of the most popular characters that we have these days is Harry Potter. He is indeed very famous especially among teens and even adults. It is actually a good theme that you can use for your costume if you want to attend a party. THE GLASSES

Have you ever thought about the similarities between Harry Potter and Network Marketing? I know it may seem a bit strange but here are some ideas:

However, this is often due to their hard work, and dedication to self-development.

3. Just like Harry, Ron and Hermione go to school and learn new things every year, successful network marketers learn new things every year as well. The network marketer who stops learning, stops growing their business.

4. Every successful network marketer has those who would attempt to destroy their business. Just like Voldemort and the death eaters who attempt to kill Harry and his friends and accomplices, many of your friends, family members and others will attempt to kill your business with their lack of understanding and knowledge or by their sheer ignorance.

5. There are certain formulas just like magic tricks, which will help to ensure your success. Just as Harry and his friends learn the magic words and passwords necessary to their success as wizards. Successful network marketers must learn the tricks of the trade and understand how network marketing functions as a business.

6. There are certain tools of the trade, which are a must in order to be successful. Harry and his friends need the tools of magic such as wands, magic hats, potions, and an invisible cloak. We in network marketing need the tools of our trade which include items such as: a website, business cards, brochures, catalogs, self-confidence, motivation, desire, and mentors and leaders.

7. There are different companies, which can be compared to the different houses. Everyone is not made to be successful in the same company. Just as every wizard succeeds better in their own house, one company does not fit all. Many companies which may be a perfect fit for one person simply will not work for another.

8. Sometimes you just have to take action even if you are scared or lack confidence. Harry and his friends often have to venture into areas, which are scary or unknown, and they often are required to take leaps of faith or to perform actions about which they are not certain of the results. Successful network marketers do these same things. They take leaps into the dark and have faith that everything will work out for their own good.

9. Just like Hagrid and Dumbledore there are teachers and mentors available to help you and coach you to success. Your sponsor, fellow team members and many others both in your company and outside of it are available to help you. Just make sure you ask for help when you need it.

10. Sometimes you just need to have fun with your business. Create some games with your business. Quiditch is a game for the wizards at Hogwarts and you need your own games to play. If you do not take the time to play with your business then you will have a hard time sticking with it for the long term. Success comes easier when you are having fun.

Harry Potter Lego Review 2010 - Set 4736 Freeing Dobby

The Harry Potter Lego set, Freeing Dobby is part of Lego's 2010 wave of Harry Potter sets, the first from this licence in five years. This set is the smallest of the sets in this wave and is a re-release of the Chamber Of Secrets set called Dobby's Release (set 4731) which came out in 2002.

The latest version includes Dobby the house elf and Lucius Malfoy, both of whom were in the earlier version, and adds a generic Harry Potter figure. The latest versions of the Dobby and Lucius minifigures are definite improvements, particularly Dobby. Like most characters that have abnormally shaped heads Lego had previously created them as moulds only, with none of the facial features painted in (Yoda is another famous example).

This time around Dobby has painted eyes, and it makes a huge difference. Now he looks more like his movie counterpart than a generic elf. Malfoy also has changes on his headpiece, with a regular painted face on one side and a death eater's mask on the other. Both heads are flesh colored as is standard in Lego sets these days.

The Harry Potter figure is in his usual Hogwarts uniform but with printing on both sides of the torso. He has a fairly young looking face (this is from Chamber of Secrets after all) with an angry/determined expression one side and happy Harry on the other.

The rest of the set is fairly standard. The previous release had more detail in the small building that accompanied the figures and the one offered her is fairly bland. There is an action feature that propels Lucius forward. Its nothing special but might appeal to kids briefly.

Overall it's a cute set and worth purchasing if only for the unique figures, notably the updated Dobby and Lucius Malfoy minifigs and the double sided Hogwarts uniform.

Wands in Harry Potter's World

In Harry Potter's world, no wizard or witch is truly complete without a wand. Wizards use wands to channel their magic powers so that they can cast spells, although as it happens, some are able to work magic without wands. However, it's apparently very difficult to do powerful and focused spells without a wand.

While it would seem that a wand increases a person's magical ability, it is more correct to say that the wand serves as a focus for magic. Think of magic as sunlight and wands as magnifying glasses: Sunlight can burn a leaf when focused through a glass.

Mr. Ollivander is said to be the best wand maker alive, although many favor the European wands made by Gregorovitch. Ollivander comes from a long line of wandmakers who have been working their craft since 382 B.C.

Wands are made of wood, and each one has some item or substance as its magical core. Ollivander typically used one of three items as a magical core: Unicorn hair, dragon heartstring, or a phoenix feather. Other wandmakers might use different materials, such as veela hair.

Wands are peculiar things that seem to have personalities and rules of their own. According to Ollivander, the wand chooses the wizard-- not the other way around. A wand remains loyal to its chosen wizard. Although it's possible for a wizard to use another's wand, it won't feel quite natural; the wizard will have the most success with the wand that chose him.

A wand will often reflect the qualities of the wizard. For example, Hagrid's wand was made from sturdy oak. Dolores Umbridge's wand is short, just like her.

Often it seems that the wood used to make the wand corresponds with the wizard's date of birth according to the Celtic calendar; a tree is associated with each month in the Celtic year, and each tree has its own symbolic meaning. It works rather like the zodiac. Harry's wand is made from holly, which corresponds with his birthday (July 31st). Incidentally, holly symbolizes luck, protection, as well as death and rebirth.

If there isn't a Hogwarts class on wand lore, there ought to be!

Harry Potter Costumes Cast Their Spell on Anyone

Looking for a few ideas for Harry Potter costumes for this year's Halloween parties? Dressing up as Harry or one of the other characters commonly seen roaming the halls of Hogwarts is easy and inexpensive, and if you're anything like me then easy and inexpensive are two key factors to consider when choosing a Halloween costume!

Most Harry Potter costumes require little more than some robes and a wand. Of course, you can get creative with accessories (like a broomstick, or a wizard's hat, for example) if you want, but with the immense popularity surrounding the books, movies, and toys, even simple Potter themed costumes are bound to get recognized.

Harry Potter costumes are available for purchase at any costume shop, although you can save some money by ordering them online - finding a website that offers them is not difficult at all, and you can also try your luck bidding on eBay.

However, given the simplicity of most Potter costumes, and keeping in mind that Halloween is a great chance to let your creative side shine, why not try your hand at making your own costume? As you can see in the popular series of movies, most of the characters would require very little in the line of clothing, make-up, and accessories to copy. The ease of Harry Potter costumes is another reason that they remain so popular year after year!

Serving The Dark Lord

If you want to stick with the Potter theme, but don't want to be just another Harry, Hagrid, or Dumbledore at the party, why not try your hand at making a Dementor costume? If you start with a clear picture of a Dementor, you can see that when it comes to Harry Potter costumes, a Dementor costume is an easy way to stay true to the theme while still being a bit original.

When it comes to Harry Potter costumes, a Dementor costume is one of the easiest to make. It requires little more than some black robes, with some black strips of fabric sewn on to them to give your costume a more ghost-like feel. Sheer black fabric can also be used to create the hood of your Dementor costume, and you can use make-up to disguise your face and hands, or splurge a little on a Dementor mask and glove set to really make your costume stand out.

Other Options

And, of course, dressing up as everybody's favorite boy-wizard is easy to do, too. You'll need to find a pair of those famous round glasses, of course. They can be purchased inexpensively at a toy store or online, as can his famous striped scarf. Add some robes and a lightning bolt shaped scar on your forehead and your Harry Potter costume is complete! You can add a wand, or even a stuffed white owl, for extra flair.

There are also plenty of options for female Harry Potter costumes. Hermione Granger, Professor McDonnegall, and Bellatrix LeStrange are just a few. Also, there's no reason there couldn't be a female Death Eater or a female Dementor.

Book store openings, movies, Halloween - Harry Potter costumes come in handy for many different occasions. No matter which Hogwarts character you choose to dress up as, you're sure to have a magical time in your Harry Potter costume!

Okay, again, it might sound silly to bring this up NOW as the sequels are being produced pronto, but we're asking who should we re-cast as the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga. I mean, WHAT IF Kristen Stewart had passed on the project or something? Who would you choose to fill the role? Let's figure it out right now. Right off the bat, a lot of Twilight blogs were wishing Australian actress Emily Browning would be officially named as the film-version of Bella. In fact, it pretty much seems like Browning was the next one in line. She's about a year and some change older than Stewart, a few inches shorter and can definitely keep up with in the film and tv credits department. Some people have said Kristen seemed very uncomfortable throughout the movie, yet Bella's character in the book is quite at peace with her introverted self and that Browning could better portray the character as she seems a bit more mature in her acting. What do you guys think about these two? Another possible actress that fans have named as possibly taking over for Stewart is Alexis Bledel. She's known for her days on Gilmore Girls and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
