Daniel Radcliffe Talks Harry Potter Behind-the-Scenes

Twitter.com - Follow Us! Get some Harry Potter behind-the-scenes info straight from the cast - keep watching! Welcome to another episode of Clevver TV. I'm Dana Ward here to tell you about the Deathly Hallows movie making details. Film star Daniel Radcliffe spoke out about life on the set. He said QUOTE, Its chaos and its fear and were terrified were not going to get it right, and its absolute madness with rewrites and script changes and scripts not being written and then coming. Its just mad. So apparently the entire crew feels the need to really please Harry Potter fans, who have helped support the franchise earn more than 1.7-billion-dollars over the years. Remember this is the last shoot that will ultimately create the final Deathly Hallows story - part one and part two - and the ending of this popular Harry Potter series is important as it marks the end of a legacy. But fans shouldn't get too worried about the on-set chaos because Radcliffe also mentioned that "chaos bears something so cool and great and polished out into the world." Again, we link the set craziness to the production's desire to "do it right", because it seems everything else has stayed similar to previous film shoots. Castmate Bonnie Wright - that's Ginny Weasley - commented on how amazing it's been to work with the same set of actors throughout the entire Potter series, calling it a "safeness" when you come back to film another installment, even comparing it to heading back to school. That was the ...

Ron and Hermione - If that's ok with you

PLEASE READ: 100th video!! You know I've been looking at my videos and while deciding what special thing I should do for my 100th vid, I realised there was something missing, something that I hadn't done in ages. You see I've been doing alot of crossover vids, depressing vids, vids where people die or get cheated on. But what I haven't done in ages is a good old fashioned couple romantic vid, for one of my most favourite movie/book couple. So for my 100th video, I decided instead of doing something special, I'm going to go back to my roots (so to speak). And make a good old fashioned Ron and Hermione vid. Believe it or not I am a major Ron and Hermione shipper so here you go, by the way the picture I used I DID NOT DRAW! I found it on google and decided to use it because I love them just as much in the books and I wanted to include the famous 'kiss' somewhere in the vid. Enjoy. PS I own none of the music or movie clips used. No copyright infringement intended.

72 hours Essentials Kit

A short video on the contents of a 72 hour kit, spliced together as a bit of fun for the informational lesson I taught to my ward for Family Home Evening. It's a bunch of silliness, really, but I hope it makes everyone smile, and also that it helps them remember what we need to become prepared - remember the goal: 16 weeks to have the kit for the end of the year! Disclaimer: I do not own Brian Reagan, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, Robin Hood, Farscape, Sleeping Beauty, Nacho Libre, Pirates of the Carribean, Indiana Jones, the Little Mermaid, The Sound of Music, Jurassic Park, The Fantastic Four, Beauty and the Beast, Ghost Busters, Lord of the Rings, or The Truman Show. I only borrowed the clips for educational purposes. Hee. ... And now you all know the vastness of my movie collection. Enjoy!

The Wheel of Time Series - Fantasy at Its Best!

You have heard of the Lord of the Rings. You have heard of Harry Potter. You have heard of the Chronicles of Narnia. The aforementioned are not only popular books, but also now popular movies. Now whether or not you have heard of the Wheel of Time series, it is simply the best when it comes to fantasy.

The Wheel of Time series was started by Robert Jordan back in 1990. In this epic tale Jordan weaves a fantastic world full of magic and wonder, strange creatures and a variety of cultures with a myriad of characters who live in a time when the world is about to enter a new age one way or another. The Dark One though bound for millennia is on the verge of breaking free from his prison. It is up to the one that the Light has chosen, the one called the Dragon Reborn, to prepare the world for facing the Enemy, and indeed to prepare himself to lead the last battle.

This world Jordan created is full of intrigue. In it, there are people who are gifted with the ability to channel the One Power, which has a male half and a female half. Those who can channel are able to do extraordinary feats, such as healing the wounded, blasting balls of fire conjured from thin air, making gateways that lead to far off places and so much more. The very concept of this kind of magic which Jordan introduces is for the most part unlike what is seen in the popular tales of magic. But things are not so straightforward, as the male half of the source has been tainted by the Dark One in a previous age, thousands of years before, when he was sealed by the man called the Dragon, Lews Therin. Now any man who channels is destined to go mad, unless the source can be cleansed in time. However, the female channelers, Aes Sedai, have already established a routine over the ages, to in effect destroy any man who shows the ability to channel. Yet, it is known that the one who has been prophesied to come, the Dragon Reborn, will himself be a channeler.

It is in this world that the Dragon Reborn appears. He must deal with the antagonism that has been built up over the centuries towards any man who can channel while at the same time deal with the many who would exploit him for personal and evil ambitions, not to mention his own struggle with maintaining sanity having to use the tainted source. He must face the many friends of the Dark, who are not obviously known. He must contend with the Forsaken, 12 powerful channels who lived during the Age of Legends, who were also sealed with the Dark One. The Dragon Reborn must unite a much divided world before the last battle to ensure victory to the Light.

In the first book of this saga, The Eye of the World, 3 youngsters and good friends from the same village, destined to be heroes, one the Dragon Reborn himself, are forced to flee their home town and reluctantly fulfill their destiny. As they travel, they learn more about themselves and the prophecies of the end which tie them together and make each necessary to defeat the Dark One, Shaitan. On their way they face minions of the Evil one, and friends of the Dark who seek to destroy them before they can fulfill the prophecies.

The world of the Wheel of Time is one of magic, sword fights, strange creatures, mystery, intrigue, politics, rich cultures which all culminate to produce one of the finest stories in the fantasy genre. Unfortunately, Robert Jordan died in 2007 while writing book 12, which was supposed to be the final book. However, before he passed, he revealed the ending to a few, and a new author, Brandon Sanderson was selected to complete the tale. Sanderson has just released the next book in the series, which unfortunately is not the last as Jordan had intended. However, Sanderson has promised to complete the story in two more books. He assures readers that he did his best to put everything in one book, but it would have been too big.

So long as we have the ending Jordan intended, we will have a truly masterpiece fantasy epic, that will surely rank as one of the best if not the best.

Goodbye HOLLYWOOD Sign & James Bond Aston Martin!

The iconic Hollywood sign may be making a move out of California. Super-star movie news, is up next! Hey guys! Welcome to GettheDaily.com. I'm Dana Ward with all of the latest in Hollywood. Can the movie and celebrity mecca survive without the ever-famous Hollywood sign? It seems the land that has hosted the larger-than-life sign since 1923 is up for grabs. While the letters were initially put-up to promote real estate in the area, those big white letters spelling out Hollywood have inarguably become a SoCal icon. An investment group purchased 138 untouched acres of land from the estate of billionaire Howard Hughes just about 5-years ago for 1-point-5-million-dollars. And now the group is offering the land for 22-million-bucks. Even with the public standing behind the Hollywood sign preservation, it may take some serious starpower to keep these 45-foot letters from being torn down. And another symbolic icon exists no longer. It's James Bond's famous Aston Martin that a driver accidentally plunged into a lake while on-set in northern Italy. The driver wasn't even racing in a scene for the newest Quantum of Solace 007 film, but he was simply delivering the stud vehicle to the set during heavy rain over the weekend. The driver had minor injuries from the fall into Lake Gardam, and Bond's car was smashed and totaled. Harry Potter founder - JK Rowling - sues her story's biggest superfan for getting too wizardly. Apparently, Steven Vander-Ark began working with a boutique ...

Harry Potter could have learned from Hamlet

Despite my best intentions, I have occasional brushes with popular culture. A few years ago, for example, I fell prey to the addictive tales of J. K. Rowling.

Rowling's story-telling is outstanding, but the conclusion of Rowling's complex tale in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, released about a year ago, was highly unsatisfactory. Now, after spending some time with Shakespearean tragedy, I'm in a position to explain why.

J. K. Rowling simply failed to respect the rules of tragedy. For six heart-racing volumes, the Harry Potter saga was shaping up as one of the grand tragedies in our literature. But in the end, Rowling lacked the intestinal fortitude needed to end her tale properly.

The rules of tragedy have been well understood since Aristotle laid them down 2,000 years ago, and I summarize them here, not intending to patronize any readers, but merely to refresh them on what they learned while studying Julius Caesar in ninth grade. A tragedy must, first, be a serious story about a conflict between a hero and a great malign force. In a tragedy, moreover, the hero must undergo a change of fortune, preferably because of his own mistake or flaw, leading to a disastrous, heart-rending denouement.

Consider Lear, that warrior king and grand personality, whose fatal mistake is to misjudge the characters of his daughters and to surrender his kingdom prematurely. With his world aligned against him, he loses everything. King Lear ends, oh so satisfyingly, with a stage strewn with corpses. Kent and Edgar, who survive, rule in Lear's place.

Consider Othello, that great general and a commanding figure, whose fatal weakness is to trust the sociopathic Iago and to allow him to plant fatal seeds of jealousy in his bosom. Weakened, Othello loses everything, and the play ends (once again, most gratifyingly) with blood and bodies everywhere. Gratiano, a minor character, succeeds to Othello's place.

Now consider Harry Potter, a hero among heroes, a wizard prodigy, a born leader and Quidditch captain, whose destiny is to battle the world's greatest wizard. Like Lear, Othello, and Hamlet, Harry has a fatal weakness: a powerful connection with Voldemort tempts him to the dark side. Harry flirts too closely with evil and, in a moment of ambition and weakness, betrays his friends. Too late, he repents, and the story ends with bodies (including his own) and rods broken and scattered the great hall of Hogwarts. The wizard world begins again, a minor character, Neville Longbottom, you can place in the wizarding world that Harry could take place.

Only, of course, that's not how JK Rowling wrote. Why have lost nerve plotting and writing the final volume, Harry never makes a fatal mistake, he never loses his way, and go safely and gently from the rubble of the last battle.

And to do thisHermione and Ron. And so does practically everyone else. In fact, after all the hullabaloo and speculation by Potter fans over what would transpire, who among the Order of the Phoenix actually dies? An elf. The werewolf. The duplicitous Severus Snape. One of the Weasley twins (the twins do not have distinct personalities). Tonks (you probably don't remember who she was, either).

In fact, at no point in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - for that matter, at no The point of the series are: - asked the players to deal emotionally with the death of a character who truly come to care about other than Dumbledore, and his age and illness take the sting of his loss. JK Rowling shrank in the final task was to break our hearts.

It was also reduced by the provision of their enemies. had to live What possible reason could Rowling for having Percy Weasley? If a character has lost his way in a tragedy and more of the enemy, he mustPerish too late, when he saw the light. JRR Tolkien understood, therefore, the great warrior Boromir was killed at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring.

And why, oh why, is to survive Draco Malfoy? In a well-staged final battle, 'Harry's arch-enemy and would regret a moment of high drama, it would strike a critical blow to Harry' s. page Then, after having served his wickness earlier, and in a state of grace, Draco would die fighting. At leastDraco would die at the hands of the Dark Lord in order to punish his parents for their wickedness. But nothing happens. The reader will not even say what happened after the last Harry meets Draco him.

Do not let it wrong: JK Rowling wanted to write a tragedy. He also made a written Deathly form of a quotation from the playwright Aeschylus', the father of Greek tragedy († 455 BC). But when it came to cases, did not haveStomach for the tragic conclusion that its history deserves.

From the dark tone of the fifth and sixth the weight, we were fully justified in waiting (a) the forces of good, would, in the final battle, sustaining heavy losses and (b) that even if the Dark Lord was defeated, for the wizard world would never be the same. In The Lord of the Rings, for example, the Harry Potter saga owes much to the defeat of Sauron marked the end of an era and the departure of the Elvesfrom Middle-earth.

Instead, Rowling left readers in a wizard world where all was copacetic, where the survivors were happily mated up, and where their little wizard offspring were happily heading off to Hogwarts. Sentimental rubbish, and a good tragedy wasted.

Harry Potter Costumes - Create Your Own Halloween Wizard!

Imagine the following: Black robes; a wand; messy black hair; black, round glasses; and a lightning bolt shaped scar on the forehead. Red and gold robes; a broomstick; a tiny golden ball with wings; messy black hair; black, round glasses; and a lightning bolt shaped scar on the forehead.

These are the two of the popular Harry Potter costumes come Halloween ever since the first Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, came out in 2001. Harry's own brand of wizard has been widely adopted by kids and adults alike and has become a staple outfit when the calendar hits October 31st. One could see a dozen Harrys in their Hogwarts robes or in their Gryffindor Quidditch gear walking down the streets.

From the simple black school robes, costumes have evolved to depict the other well-loved characters from the movies. The tremendous popularity of the Harry Potter movies has made close to a million fans to want to dress up as their favorite characters. With all these characters wandering the streets, it might be possible to create an impromptu Harry Potter movie right in your neighborhood.

Buying Harry Potter outfits from costume shops can be expensive, however. Here are tips on how to dress like a witch and wizard and create your own Harry Potter costumes.

Harry Potter in School Robes - Find a black graduation gown and put on a Gryffindor patch. If you know how to embroider, there are a lot of patterns for the Gryffindor House patch available from different web sites. If not, silkscreened patches will do. For your inner wear, pair up black slacks with a white long-sleeve polo and a red-and-gold striped tie. Put on a black cardigan. Finish your look with a pair of black, round glasses and draw a lightning bolt scar on your forehead. Don't forget your wand.

Quidditch Robes - Instead of a black robe, find a scarlet one and put on a Gryffindor patch. For your inner wear, put on a pair of khaki slacks and a red knitted sweater. If you can find knee and elbow pads, all the better. Don't forget your broomstick and the trademark round glasses and lightning scar. To make your Golden Snitch, paint a small Styrofoam ball gold and attach some wings made out of yellow pipe cleaners.

Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger - Making a Ron Weasley costume is the same as Harry Potter in school robes, only that Ron has bright red hair and lots of freckles, which may require a wig and an orange marker. Hermione Granger's school robes are also similar to Harry's and Ron's. For her inner wear, find a pleated black skirt and pair it with a long-sleeve button down polo, red and gold striped tie, and black, knee-high socks. Complete the Hermione look with bushy hair and books.

Hogwarts Student - If you don't want to be Harry, Ron, or Hermione and be just a regular Hogwarts student, simply replace your colors of your patches and ties. Gryffindor students wear red and gold ties, Slytherins wear green and silver, Ravenclaws wear blue and bronze, and Hufflepuffs wear yellow and black. You can find the different patterns for the different House crest patches from various Harry Potter fan sites.

Top 5 Kids Fancy Dress Costume Choices

Kids fancy dress costumes sales aren't only strong during the Halloween season. It's a huge industry all year round these days and though certain trends come and go, there are themes which are always very popular. Obviously things like certain films coming out such as Batman or Harry Potter have a big impact on a kids desire to get the latest Hogwarts attire or don the Bat-suit but more often than not the following themes for kids fancy dress costumes remains the same. In no particular order the Top 5 are as follows.

SUPERHEROES - No great surprises with this one. More popular with boys than girls and for obvious reasons. Who amongst us wouldn't want to be Superman or Batman for the day. Again, dependent on film releases etc., the popularity of certain characters change but as a theme 'Superheroes' are rarely out of fashion where kids fancy dress is concerned.

DISNEY - Disney costumes are ever popular all year round. What makes them so prominent amongst any kids fancy dress party is the sheer range of outfits available. Disney themselves have been in business for decades and consequently have a huge range of characters to promote. Whether it be a contemporary or classic, Disney are guaranteed to have what you need.

HARRY POTTER - Over the last five years the popularity of Harry Potter fancy dress has soared and it's not hard to see why if one looks at some of the book sales or box office receipts. It is simply an entertainment phenomenon which has now resulted in a clamor for the most authentic looking Harry Potter related fancy dress, whether it be the Hermione Granger costume or all the necessary accessories. Either way there is now enough choice to satisfy the most ardent Harry Potter fan.

HALLOWEEN - Now a $9 billion industry, Halloween has helped make kids fancy dress costumes into the size of industry it is today as the spending for this holiday continues to grow year on year. One of the appealing things about Halloween is that any of the above themes can be used as well as the more Halloween typical outfits of Vampires, Witches and ghouls. In essence, Halloween offers the largest range of kids fancy dress costumes for that very reason.

ANGEL/FAIRY AND PIRATE - One theme that always stands out for girls is that of the angel or fairy. Mainly stemming from TV and film exposure and no doubt the desire of parents wanting to there kids in such cute costumes. Annually there is rarely a dip in the sales of angel and fairly costumes. Unlike the sales of pirate outfits which have seen a huge increase over the last five years, mainly due to the huge success of the Pirates of The Caribbean movies. This popularity, especially among young boys looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

History of Disney's Princess Fairy Tales

Disney is well known for their beautifully animated fairy tales and the characters from them that have captivated us, just as much as its icon mouse since 1928. Something that many people do not know about our treasured Disney Princess stories from the Walt Disney Company is that many of them were based on already existing works.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated feature film produced by Walt Disney in 1937. The film was originally based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm titled 'Snow White'. The Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm were German academics and were responsible for many popular fairy tales that include 'Rumpelstiltskin', 'Rapunzel', 'Hansel and Gretel' and 'The Frog Prince'.

Cinderella

Cinderella was released in 1950 and produced by Walt Disney. The story of Cinderella has been recorded in many works throughout history with versions included from Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. Disney's animated film was most likened to Charles Perrault's fairy tale. Charles Perrault was a French author and published many fairy tales and his works include 'Puss in Boots' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty was produced by Walt Disney and released to theaters in 1959. The Disney story of Sleeping Beauty was also based on the Charles Perrault works from his fairy tale titled 'Sleeping Beauty'.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was released in 1989. The Disney story of The Little Mermaid was originally based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale titled 'The Little Mermaid'. Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet and his works consisted of many well known fairy tales that include 'The Ugly Duckling', 'Thumbelina', 'The Princess and the Pea', 'The Emperor's New Clothes' (of which Disney based their animated feature film 'The Emperor's New Groove') and many more famous stories.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast was released by Disney in 1991. The story of Beauty and the Beast was originally based on the traditional fairy tale titled 'Beauty and the Beast' by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and abridged and republished by French author Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.

The Disney adaptations of these earlier recognized stories have enabled children to experience the stories through the latest developments and technologies of visual media. Throughout history these stories in their original written and subsequent adapted visual forms have given great enjoyment to children and adults alike.

Harry Potter and the Realms of Fantasy

I was most interested recently to learn that I am not alone in wishing Harry Potter would fall off his own broomstick. All around me, each time a new Harry book is released, there are frenzied excursions to bookshops all over the world. My daughter is a Potter Head and hungrily consumes each book as it comes onto the literary market.

Personally, I cannot find these books entertaining no matter how hard I try to immerse myself in the story line. I determinedly sat down one winter's day in front of a roaring fire and began the first book, but by the time the wretched owl had flown in I was yawning and wishing myself elsewhere. Someone should write another book, entitled 'How to Find Harry Potter Interesting and Read a Million Words About Him without Shooting Yourself.'

It was bad news for me when it was announced last week, with the arrival of the last book in the series, that the collection was to be recognized as Classic Literature and that J K Rowling was now widely considered to be of the caliber of Charles Dickens. Uh? Rats, I thought, now I will definitely have to read up on old Harry and try to find some semblance of whatever it is the rest of the world sees in this childish fantasy set on paper.

At a social gathering a week ago I learned that I am not Harry's only critic. At least six out of a party of fifteen thought the Potter library was tedious in the extreme. We were shouted at by the majority though, and had to take cover at one end of the table.

I fully expect to be pilloried for this criticism of a work that has set children's literature on fire for the past decade. When the Harry Potter films were released I though I might be saved by at least knowing what the story was about, thus I would be able to fool people that I had read the books. Unfortunately, I fell asleep during every one of the films. Despite the enthusiasm over this latest contribution of Ms Rowling, I still cannot bring myself to be enthralled. Sorry. I am deeply ashamed, you will all be pleased to know. Yawn.

Appropriate Gifts for Children

We often see suggested ages when we shop for gifts for children, but I'm very suspect about the accuracy of those. A child who is smarter than other children their age will bore quickly with toys meant for his or her age group. Another example would be for a child who is perhaps a little slower than his or her peers may find that they become frustrated with a gift that they're not quite prepared for. Consider the child's mental and emotional levels when purchasing gifts for children.

Some toys are universal and that they are appropriate for all ages. These can make excellent gifts for children and that he will not have to worry about the levels of skill or knowledge required. The Leapfrog reading system masters this concept. By purchasing books of differing levels, the Leapfrog reading system has a wide range of appeal across a large span of ages. My daughter's Leapfrog is four years old now and she still loves it. Any list of potential gifts for children should include an item similar to the Leapfrog reading system.

It seems as if video games have replaced the board games of years ago but they still can be a great source of fun and a wonderful way for the family to spend time together. While shopping for gifts for children, you should look at favorite games from your childhood. Many of these games have universal appeal that seem to the ageless. My children love Life, Monopoly, and Payday. They learn money counting while I enjoy sharing games from my own childhood. I really do suggest that you take a good look at the four teams available because they can make for really fun gifts for children.

A lot of kids love books but they must be tailored to their interests. For example, boys seem to gravitate to the slightly crude Captain Underpants series, while girls adore Junie B. Jones. Add books to your list of gifts for children and watch a boy or girl's eyes light up when he or she receives the thoughtful gift. Many of these books will be kept for years and years and looked at by the children as old friends. You can even purchase picture books for the youngest recipients on your gift list. They absolutely love flipping through a book it makes them feel as accomplished as their older brother or sister who can read. Kids love to play grown up, even if grown ups to them are their big brothers and sisters.

Movies make wonderful gifts for children. With the advent of the VCRs and DVD players, movies are now incredibly affordable and extremely entertaining. Harry Potter videos are all the rage for the slightly older crowd. I know many adults that love following the adventures and of the young wizard and his friends. Pixar films appeal to both children and adults. Many television shows from past decades are again becoming popular. Most children love watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and I admit seeing Lawrence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis makes me laugh. Pee-Wee's Playhouse is the most requested quiet-time video from my collection. He's a weird guy, but there's no denying the entertainment value.

Girls of all ages seem to love American Girl dolls and Build-A-Bear dolls. And there is no end to the assortment that the manufacturers offer. They are extremely clever in this regard. The girl can choose an age appropriate doll and then choose what the doll or bear will wear. My daughter and her friends all love showing off their own artistically dressed creations. These items can make wonderful gifts for children.

The Black Swan's Lessons

The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb is appropriately subtitled The Impact of the Highly Improbable. Taleb chose this bird-centric title because until Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh arrived in Australia in 1697 and encountered black swans, Europe believed that all swans were white. His discovery forced Europeans to revise what had been an obvious and accepted belief. Taleb's title reminds readers that just because you have never seen a black swan, doesn't mean that there are no black swans.

It takes an unusual thinker to write a best-selling book predicated on the head-scratching concept that unlikely events seem impossible when they lie in the unknown or in the future, but after they occur, become a part of our readily-accepted reality. Taleb has both the personal and professional credentials to delve into such a premise.

Born in Lebanon in 1960, he holds a master's in business administration from Wharton, a Ph.D. from the University of Paris and is serving as the Dean's Professor in the Sciences of Uncertainty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Taleb was founder of Empirica LLC, a corporation with interests in hedge funds and a research laboratory in London. At 25, he became chief currency derivatives trader for Banque Indosuez, and has also served as a managing director and head trader at Union Bank of Switzerland.

In Taleb's words, "It is easy to see that life is the cumulative effect of a handful of significant shocks. It is not so hard to identify the role of Black Swans from your armchair ... Look into your own existence, count the significant events, the technological changes, and the inventions that have taken place in our environment since you were born and compare them to what was expected before their advent. Look into your own personal life, to your choice of profession, say, or meeting your mate. How often did these things occur according to plan?"

As examples of Black Swans, Taleb offers events such as these to remind us that what we don't know can be far more relevant than what we do know:

The internal combustion engine
World Wars I and II
The Cuban Revolution
The personal computer
1990's internet stock bubble
The Harry Potter phenomenon, which turned a mother on welfare into a billionaire
9/11

Taleb is surprisingly positive about America's place in the global economy, and writes: "It so happens that America is currently far, far more creative than (older) nations of museum-goers and equation solvers. It is also far more tolerant of bottom-up tinkering and undirected trial and error. And globalization has allowed the United States to specialize in the creative aspect of things, the production of concepts and ideas. There is more money in designing a shoe than in actually making it: Nike, Dell, and Boeing can get paid for just thinking, organizing and leveraging their know-how and ideas while subcontracted factories in developing countries do the grunt work, and engineers in cultured and mathematical states do the noncreative technical grind. The American economy has leveraged itself heavily on the idea generation, which explains why losing manufacturing jobs can be coupled with a rising standard of living."

According to Taleb, unlike earlier cultures, Americans haven't learned to be afraid of failure. We're willing to trade the possibility of failure for the chance at a big upside.

Bucking the conventional wisdom of most business books, The Black Swan suggests that whatever future success we may enjoy will most likely have more to do with unexpected factors than with precise planning and prediction of outcomes.

Magazines Evolve with Print Media Technology

In the 1950s, when cameras were large boxy objects usually steadied on a tripod, the film that went inside them required a long time to develop. Then Polaroid introduced its instant film, which developed within minutes of pulling it from the camera. Around the same era, magazines went from mostly text to a graphics-driven format. Magazines like Look and Life continued to be a balanced mixture of photos and writing. And while cameras got smaller and their ability to capture color and light became more agile and sophisticated, the technology did not change drastically until the age of personal computers and digital technology.

As the industries of photography and printing advance, so does the magazine industry that literally puts those two together into one readable sandwich. As soon as digital images came onto the scene, so did hundreds and thousands of new magazines. During the 1990s, many media companies went from color separations and other slow and expensive processes to the more advanced digital format. This allowed photographers to take a picture in the field and send it through email to the publisher, skipping over the printing process entirely. An occasional scanned image might be used from traditional film processing, but for the most part, magazines have switched entirely to the digital format. This drives down the cost to produce them, quickens the time it takes to produce a magazine, and makes them more graphics-driven and visually colorful.

In order to get customers to subscribe; each magazine has to struggle to set its own brand identity apart from the crowd. The real winner in the competitive arena is the magazine reader, because now there are more choices than ever and the content is more rich and entertaining. But the prices are within reach and competitive, making magazine reading a rather affordable pastime.

Major bookstores that carry magazines will now dedicate an entire section of the store to them, because there are so many to display for consumers to choose the ones they want. In the genre of home decorating and lifestyle magazines, for instance, there are at least 100 for every one that existed in the pre-digital era. Of course this also heats up competition between magazines, because instead of just having one sports magazine like Sports Illustrated or outdoor magazine like Field and Stream, there are dozens of magazines in that same category.

Examining Dream Sequences in Eragon

The fantasy adventure "Eragon," based on book one of Christopher Paolini's trilogy about a young Dragon Rider, has been drawing criticism for borrowing ideas from the "Harry Potter" series (Hagrid's dragon eggs and baby dragons), "Star Wars" series (Luke's uncle killed by evil empire), and most notably "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (darkly magical advisor, one young man must make a journey, etc). Another element that "Eragon" has in common with these other films is its use of dream sequences - in this case false dreams sent by an evil sorcerer working for a corrupt king.

In the movie, a teenaged farm boy named Eragon (Edward Speleers) finds what appears to be the last dragon egg. After secretly raising the animal, Eragon reluctantly becomes a Dragon Rider in order to right some of the wrongs taking place in the kingdom of Alagaesia. In an earlier era, dragons and their riders soared through the skies keeping peace across the land until tragedy brought about the apparent extinction of the fire-breathing beasts.

In addition to keeping a low profile for his own protection and that of Saphira (his dragon), Eragon struggles with other problems: when he was young his mother fled with no explanation; the uncle who raised him was murdered, despite his status as a Dragon Rider he receives little or no respect because of his young age; and he has disturbing dreams about a beautiful elf woman (Sienna Guillory as Arya) who is suffering in a prison and needs his help.

Each dream provides more information about her identity, situation, and location. Eragon has no way of knowing that the dreams are not authentic, but are being sent to him telepathically by the darkly magical Durza the Shade (Robert Carlyle) who imprisoned Arya and hopes to set a trap for the young Dragon Rider.

In accordance to scientific thought, most comedies and dramas attribute the source of dreams to the unconscious mind of the dreamer, but the fantasy, science fiction, and horror genres rely almost exclusively on the supernatural, pre-scientific conception of dreams originating from an outside evil source. Take Harry Potter's recurring dreams of Lord Valdemort and Anakin Skywalker's recurring dreams of his mother's death - all provided supernaturally from sources outside themselves.

As with Harry and Anakin, Eragon's dreams propel him towards his destiny. This destiny is unknown to the dreamers, but is understood by older, wiser, more magical beings. In addition, as "Eragon" director Stefen Fangmeier no doubt realized, if carried out successfully, dream sequences are an excellent means of providing background information and moving the story forward without bogging things down with lengthy explanations.
