The Royal Pavilion Brighton - A Unique Pleasure Palace

Brighton sometimes known by the name London-by-the-Sea has one real star attraction, and that is the Brighton Pavilion. Less than 52 miles from London it is on the tourist trail, but be you a visitor to the shores of England or a permanent resident the Brighton Pavilion is a must see. It is very much a reminder of a bygone age, and this is what this pleasure palace serves to remind us of.

It was built in the late part of the eighteenth century by the then Prince Regent, later King George IV, and his excesses at that time left its name behind, because this time in English history is forever remembered as the Regency Period. The Regency Period stands for huge excess and extravagance, and it was at this time that Brighton emerged as the place for the fashionable to be seen, and it emerged at that time as Europe's first seaside resort. It was therefore entirely fitting in that time of extravagance for this pseudo Oriental palace to be built, and even a glance at the external features will let you see instantly what is meant by the description of the Regency Period.

What we are talking about here is a fantasy structure the Disney World of its time with minarets and onion domes on the outside and total extravagance within. Inside it is incredibly ornate, and photographs do not do it justice, you have to go to Brighton and see it for yourself. Its popularity waned after the passage of the Regency Period and its regency fops were replaced by the more sober Victorian era. It is known that Queen Victoria 'was not amused' by the Brighton Pavilion and so Brighton became a place of faded brilliance, and became somewhat tatty by the twentieth century.

It undoubtedly has a unique charm in the winter, and deservedly remains popular with visitors keen to see the history, and enjoy the bracing breeze, the fish and chips, and the three mile promenade on the famous Brighton pier. Brighton has undergone quite a regeneration, and a well worth port of call are the Lanes, once best known for antiques but now full of cafes, and art galleries as well as good restaurants. Brighton and especially the Brighton Pavilion are well worth a trip to see.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Facts You May Not Know

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the final of the Harry Potter novels. J.K. Rowling wrote a total of 7. The books narrate the stories of a young magician who enters the school of wizardry and goes through the troubles and the tribulations of the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents in his quest to conquer the wizarding world and subjugate non magical people to his rule.

Deathly Hallows broke the sales records as the fastest selling book ever, selling more than 11 million copies in merely 24 hours of being released. The previous record was held by J.K. Rowling's previous book, Half Blood Prince.

The book was finished by Rowling in January 2007. She finished her 20 year long writing while staying at the Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh, which she signed a statue in her room with the writing "J.K. Rowing finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (652) on 11 January 2007".

The book was so expected that a bookstore shipped a few books in advance by accident and they were being sold on eBay for over 15 times they're original value.

Because of the series worldwide fame and appeal, it has now been translated into many languages. It has also been adapted into a two part movie. One which will be released on November 2010 and the second part which will be release in May 2011.

Many have reviewed the book and have compared it to classics such as Huckleberry Finn and Alice in Wonderland, who both have been very successful and appeal both to a mature audience as well as children.

Harry Potter Audio Books

Who in the world doesn't know about Harry Potter? Some may have not seen the blockbuster movies - starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, among a cast of new young actors and award-winning veterans - but a survey shows that 87 percent of people the world over have certainly heard about Hogwarts' celebrated wizard and his breathtaking adventures.

This juvenile fiction, created by Joanne K. Rowling or simply J.K. Rowling, has lured not just the kids but even adults too. In fact, some middle-aged fans have become avid Potter-heads and collectors of Harry Potter memorabilia and everything that has to do with the literary and cinematic phenomenon.

They've read the books and watched the movies (except for the finale, which is still in the making), and they're buying the audio book version too. It truly is a treat for HP fans, adding to their collections the audio book series, made possible through digital audio wizardry, with special mention to Jim Dale, one of the readers.

All of the seven Harry Potter books - The Sorcerer's Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hallows - have excellent audio effects and dramatic dialogues, a treat not just to the visually impaired but also to those who prefer to let their ears trigger their imagination.

Harry Potter books have been widely received by young and old people across cultures. Even if you are too busy with your work or chores and have no time to read, or are just not inclined to read texts, you can still come along with Harry and friends and fight fiends in the engaging world of witchcraft and wizardry.

With the audio books, available in MP3 and WMA formats, you can imagine yourself wandering around Hogwarts, England and beyond. All you need is a handy audio file player, like your iPod or any smart phone, to be fascinated and inspired by this well-wrought tale of good versus evil.

It's a good way for whetting your child's appetite for literature too. All seven books are even richer and more fantastic than most fairy tale collections. Several critics also note that by the fifth book (The Order of the Phoenix), the Potter saga has ceased to become children's literature, claiming its place in the revered shelf of literary wonders.

You won't be having any difficulty looking for the audio books. While your local libraries may have a few of them, online audio book stores are brimming with them. You can purchase the abridged or unabridged version. You can also get the last book, The Deathly Hallows, from any of these sites for only $80. J.K. Rowling's treat is truly worth more than that.

Movies - Divorce, Loss, and Kids

Movies can touch the heart of youngsters who are going through a divorce. From a psychological point of view, movies address two basic genres that children of divorce deal with everyday.

1. There are movies that are specifically about divorce itself, such as Liar Liar, Imagine That, E.T. or Mrs. Doubtfire. Here, a child can identify with what other kids may be going through and feel less isolated in their experience.

2. The second theme that is useful for kids of divorce centers around loss and the child's heroic adaptation to that loss. Movies like Harry Potter, The Karate Kid, Cinderella and the Wizard of Oz. all are about overcoming loss.

If you look carefully at children's movies, you will discover that many of these kids come from family structures that are anything but traditional. Consider Cinderella who was raised by a wicked step mother or Pinocchio who was "raised" by Geppetto, or The Little Mermaid, Ariel, who was raised by King Triton, with no mother mentioned.

ET is not often thought of as a divorce movie - but where is Elliot's father? The Karate Kid (Daniel is raised by a single mother) and The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy is an orphan raised by her aunt and uncles) are both wonderful movies respectively, about a teenage boy and a teenage girl, who have to deal with the inadequacy of their parenting environment and long for something more.

You may wonder why these themes are so popular if the many children who love these films have intact families. The answer to that is really quite simple and yet profound as well.

Children want more from their parents. They always do, and they almost always get less than what they truly want. It is the nature of human life. Whether you have two parents, one parent, or a stepparent, we all long for more.

Children and teenagers have a natural wish to explore past their families to a world outside to find love, support and validation. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy finds it in an adventure with some inadequate male adults, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, while confronting a scary woman in the guise of the Wicked Witch of the West. She comes to terms with family life when she accepts that these men and the Wizard himself are just people - like herself - who strive to be better than they are.

In ET, Elliot finds an extraterrestrial friend, and a special one at that. We can all relate with the wish to have a special friend who can make everyday magical.

In The Karate Kid, Daniel (Dre in the 2010 remake) is a boy raised by a single mother, who gains one of the great pleasures of life - the mentorship of a surrogate father. How many children going through divorce end up with surrogate fathers, whether they are coaches, teachers, ministers, or rabbis - and even sometimes psychotherapists - who truly make a difference in who they are to become?

One cannot leave the topic without touching upon the great contemporary classic, Harry Potter. Harry is a young man who has to deal with the loss of both his parents while living with his unkind Aunt and Uncle. Harry's adventure into another world speaks to all children who have a yearning for their own sense of specialness, a new set of surrogate parents and a wish to individuate.

So, go to the movies, rent them and see them at home with your children. You do not have to provoke a big discussion. Just being there while they see the movie is good parenting in my book.

It may evoke a thought, a feeling, a tear, or a longing. And all that is good. What is even better is if you are in the mix when it happens.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince PSP Review

Today we're looking at the hand held version of the new Harry Potter game. This time people at Hogwarts are plotting against Dumbledore (the old headmaster) to get darkness into the school borders. Of course this isn't as easy as it seems and quickly Harry starts to suspect  several people after a series of unusual events. It is safe to say that the movie is a great success but can the video game follow in its footsteps?

The first thing you will notice about the PlayStation portable version is that the Hogwarts school is mapped in 2d with 3d elements. Which means that the environment looks 3d but doesn't move around your character. Even more reason for concern is that you walk to different rooms by walking past invisible gates, after which a loading time of about 2-4 seconds occurs. This wouldn't be a big problem if it wasn't for the insane amount of searching and walking that is required in this game.

In this game you are Harry, not really a bombshell, and you have to search for various items around the castle. You do this by talking to different people, they will mention that they've seen the item in a curtain part of the castle. After this conversation you can navigate yourself to this room and get the item. Unfortunately these items are mostly owned by schoolmates and you have to get it by trading with some of your possessions, this can be chess pieces or some plants. It's a pretty painless experience as you can locate the necessary items by hitting select. A navigation arrow to the item will appear, just like how you found the person in the first place. However sometimes you need to get something by trading something rare, which can be difficult. These rare items don't have the same navigation and pretty much require you to search the whole castle before you can proceed in the story. This is a real pain and together with the 2d Hogwarts rendering not much fun to do either.

The story will proceed when you find the items you were required to find. But you will find little satisfaction from it. A few dialogs that you need to read, it isn't voice recorded by the actors, and some mini games that aren't too great either.

The bottom line is this: the game isn't much fun to play and isn't very well executed. Graphics wise and gameplay wise it is a disappointment and even for children the experience can be a little dull. You are better off watching the movie instead (and the movie only!). Or the book as well. I guess that's fine too.

How to Get the Best Deal on Your Universal Orlando Tickets

For families planning a trip to Orlando, the ticket prices at Walt Disney World can cause a real case of sticker shock. A single park, single day ticket is now over $80 per person. To experience some of Orlando's best theme park rides and attractions without charging up your credit cards, consider adding a few days at the Universal Resort.

There are actually two Universal theme parks in Florida, located within easy walking distance of one another. The first is Universal Studios, which features rides and shows that focus on the movies. There's a roller coaster themed after the Mummy movies, a Men in Black dark ride, and of course, a boat ride that features an appearance by Jaws. Islands of Adventure, while still themed around the movies, actually contains many more thrill rides and roller coasters. Fans are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, opening in 2010.

So how do you get the best bargains on Universal tickets? Start online. Tickets are almost always cheaper online than at the gate, and it also saves you from standing in long lines when you'd rather be exploring the parks. Guests can purchase a one day pass that admits them to both parks for only $84.99 online. That's about the same as a one park Disney ticket. For $99.99, you can purchase a two day ticket that allows you to hop back and forth to both parks as much as you want. This is a great bargain, and will give you a chance to really explore and ride as much as you want.

Planning to visit the Universal theme parks more than once during your trip? Check out the unlimited weekly pass, which includes admission to both parks. It's $124.99 at the gate, but if you purchase online, it's only $99.99. You must order it two days before you pick it up to get that special price.

Also, if you plan to stay on site at one of the Universal hotels, ask about free or discounted park tickets when you make your reservations. They often have specials in place that provide free admission with a three or four stay hotel stay.

Harry Potter: History and Facts

Harry Potter is fictional character created by J.K. Rowling as part of her popular Harry Potter series of novels. Harry Potter is an orphan who studies magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lord Voldemort attacked Harry's parents on October 31st in their home when they were attempting to protect Harry. Lily, Harry's mother saved him by ultimately placing him under ancient magic that protected him, but lost her life in the process. In the series, Harry has two friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, that are there to help him through the trials and tribulations that he faces. Trials and tribulations that includes the normal awkward moments of growing up as well as fighting evil and stopping villains.

The Harry Potter series of books look at many important topics that pertain to growing up. The books include themes like friendship, love, death, prejudice, and courage in a realistic way that kids can learn from them. The books are written as a fantasy based mystery in which the reader learns the secrets of the story at the same time that Harry Potter gains the information. Readers, like Harry Potter, are not able to see the thoughts of other characters until they are revealed through the unfolding of the plot to Harry.

Beyond the book series, there have been movies released that have been among the most popular movie series ever released. Harry Potter is recognized world wide and has a following of fans that travel world-wide to attend lectures and specially planned Potter themed activities. A party featuring Harry Potter theme decorations and accessories would certainly make any child happy. With the last book due to be released in the not-so-distant future, it may be time to consider having a book release celebration. After all, parties don't have to be just for birthdays anymore.

Harry Potter: Rupert Grint Crushing on Emma Watson?

Follow Us - Twitter.com Thanks for coming back to the show. I'm Dana Ward at the Clevver TV headquarters. Soooo, what's the deal with behind-the-scenes in the world of Harry Potter. We're discussing it right now, of course! A bit ago, Rupert Grint got quoted as saying that Emma Watson is quite popular with the HP cast, that he didn't dread kissing her on film AND he even said that he would NOT reveal if he or Daniel Radcliff has the hardest crush on Emma. Shhh... they both seemed to have a super crush. But since then, a bit more details got released on the recent Rupert-Emma kiss in the upcoming Harry Potter installment. Yes, a kissing hook-up finally happens and that's where the story ends. In reports, Grint straight-up said it was a bit like kissing his sister since the two go back like 10 years. He continued that it was weird and the first-try was a disaster because he and Watson just couldn't stop laughing. And then Emma has spoken out that she just wanted to get the spit-swapping scene over with - and all because of the crazy public scrutiny - adding that she pounced on Rupert. Her words, not mine. As far as who Ruper WANTS to be kissing in real-life, Rupert has said he prefers the not-as-pretty, quirkier types - I hope you're listening, ladies! For all of the latest Harry Potter news, trailers and videos, checkout Clevver.com. I'm Dana Ward - see you soon! Hosted by Dana Ward.

All Aboard! The Christmas Village Railroad Train

There's nothing like the finished look that a Village with its own train
provides! Almost all of the Villages have train stations, and even if you don't
have one, who cares?! This is, after all, make-believe... The clever Village Nut
who wants a fabulous setup this year will tap into the model railroad train
world for inspiration on train sets and the terrain around them.

When I first decided that my Village needed a public transportation system, I started to look at model railroad sites. The first thing I needed to decide was what size train would look best with my Village and the space I had - a bigger one that looks more proportionate to the people and buildings, or a smaller one that wasn't to scale but was more available and cheaper. Holy Smokes! I thought this would be relatively easy, but I got hit in the face with terms like gauges and scales and 3-rail tracks and electrical issues. I had no idea what these terms meant, and was frustrated by what I thought was an unnecessary amount of technical talk. I just wanted a nice little train for my Village! I didn't want to become a model railroader.

So, just as I put together different buildings and accessories to please myself rather than someone else who had different design ideas, I thought why don't I just get a train that I like and to heck with the scales and gauges! So I did, and I ended up buying a Christmas Train from Bachmann. For the record, it was in HO scale...

For those of you who'd like a little more technical info, I'll just give you a bit. There are two main size references used in model railroading. The first one is Gauge, which is the space between the train track rails. The second is Scale,
which is the proportion that the item is to it's real-life counterpart. For
example, a 1:1 scale means that the item is life-sized. You definitely aren't going to be putting one of these in your Village! Here is some of the more popular train sizes and what they look like:

Gauge HO Gauge: 1" = 87 real-life inches,
or a 1" tall figurine equals a 7.25' real-life person (not very realistic)

S Gauge: 1" = 64 real-life inches, or a 1" tall
figurine equals a 5.3' real-life person (closer to reality)
O
Scale:
1" = 48 real-life inches, or a 1" tall figurine equals a 4'
real-life person (reasonably realistic)

G Scale:

1 =

24 real-life inches, or a 1" figurine equals a 2' real-life person (not very realistic)

I've found that most
Villagers I know like the O scale

O Scale trains are the most popular ones out there so the
selection is good. The set looks great in all the Department 56 and similar-sized Villages and
is easy to set up and keep running. This is important if you just want to enjoy
the Village and not have to keep tending it, as the smaller-sized trains have a tendency
to derail! An interesting fact I found was that O Scale trains are considered
collectible, and therefore have the potential to appreciate in value. The
downside is that it is more expensive to buy, and it runs on more expensive
3-rail track (which is electrically safer than the other Scales which run on
2-rail track). The new Lionel Harry Potter Hogwart's Express train set is O
gauge.

HO scale trains come in a large variety of sets, including quite a
few Christmas-decorated sets, and is the most economical way to go. This is nice
if you just want something out-of-the-box to set up. You can get tighter
turns in HO Scale too, if space is an issue. But the smaller size of this scale
makes it out of proportion with most Villages except perhaps small ones like
David Winter Cottages. They tend to be more fragile than their larger
counterparts, and they are fussier about having a level surface to run on. Also
(and this was the deal-breaker for me!) HO Scale trains like to fall
off their tracks easily AND they are a little difficult to put
back on. Lastly, they lose value quickly.

S
gauge
also fits well with most Villages. It doesn't derail easily and
runs on the less expensive 2-rail track. The downside is that there
are fewer models to choose from and they are expensive. The 2-rail track
systems are known to cause some electrical problems.

G gauge
trains are the big ones we're used to seeing go around the Christmas tree (even
if just in the movies!). While many folks consider these to be too large
for Department 56 and similar-sized Villages, I personally like them to run
around the outer perimeter of the village. The train runs on the less expensive
2-rail track and the cars do not derail easily. High-end brands have the
potential to appreciate in price. The downside is that you need a LOT of room
for these, the 2-rail track systems can cause some electrical problems, and they
are EXPENSIVE.

As an FYI, I've found that model railroaders are
SUPERB reality-creators in their train displays. If you've ever gone to a train
store, you've seen the most amazing variety of realistic terrain and landscaping
items you'll ever see. Small bags of rocks of every size and color, fake grass
that looks better than the stuff in your lawn, cinders to go around the tracks,
dirt, trees, moss, shrubs - you name it. Lots of folks are cross-overs
between the train and Village worlds, and their displays are
spectacular.

If you want to have
a realistic display, then you want to have your train and Village items in
roughly the same size category. But the whole point about about Christmas
Village displays is to help bring joy into the Christmas Season. If you get too
bogged down in realism and perfection, you'll miss out on a lot of fun.
Enjoy!

5 Reasons Why Girls Love Twilight

Before the movie there was the book. And the book is the root of all evil...erhm...awesomeness that was then transformed into a movie. Many people skip over the book and watch the movie, which isn't getting an Oscar nominee any time soon, but it was a decent movie that reached its audience and made lots and lots of money. Twilight's true power lies in the books themselves. The saga transports girls and taps into all of their primal desires: to be loved and loved in return.

Twilight allows the book to be commercialized. Actors give characters a face that allows studios to create merchandise like Twilight party favors, and posters. Movies also reach a greater audience than books do. For some reason, many people don't like to read. They associate reading with schoolwork and boredom. The problem is that they're reading the wrong books. Twilight originated as a book so there was no way other than fan art to create merchandise to sell and make a greater profit. Being the capitalist society that we live in, there was no other place for Twilight to go but the movies.

The first three books especially transport the reader to a different world. With a simple language, anyone with a middle school reading level can enjoy the books. There is consistent action (minus Bella's whiny period in New Moon) and danger that makes your heart race and get you addicted.

Meyer's vampire folklore differs from industry standards. Her vampires go out into the sun and essentially have every day lives. One of the reasons to read the book is to explore this new world within our world. These vampires share similar qualities with other vampires and it's interesting to see where Meyer takes the other folklore. Granted she may have gone too far with Renesmee, but she sold it and supported her ideas and people loved it.

Another reason why girls love the Twilight series is the boys, duh. Edward has the tortured soul that taps into every girl's motherly instinct. We want to take him up into our arms, cuddle with him, and make everything all right.

Same goes for Jacob. Besides the fact that he's drop dead gorgeous (in our minds and as portrayed by Taylor), he's the best friend that every girl wants in a guy. Someone to talk to and spend nights with. He's warm (what girl isn't cold, seriously), and he goes to the ends of the earth for Bella. Granted its because he prematurely imprinted on Renesemee, but that's another story.

Besides all those reasons, the real reason is how girls can easily identify with Bella. They share a connection. Every woman has been torn between to guys, loved someone, and lost them. They've had to balance friends with a relationship. All Twilight does is show one girls way to handle being a teenager.

When people put down Twilight to fans, the best way for you, the fan, to debate them is to remind them of how the book is easy to read, involves love, danger and heartache. Don't forget how identifiable Bella is. Don't forget to tell them to shut up and read the book before they talk.

Halloween Costumes Meet Blockbuster Movies

Is it that life imitates art? Or that art imitates art? It seems that whichever is the case, licensed costumes for Halloween follow blockbuster movies. Like many toys, books and other consumer goods, Halloween costumes often style themselves after movie characters. Some manufacturers choose to carry licensed Halloween costumes; others choose to create "knockoffs" that closely resemble the licensed products, without paying the licensing fees... but they are not allowed to use the characters' names on their costumes.

For the past few years, Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) costumes have been a huge success. With three big pirate movies, there have been six major characters to create: Captain Jack Sparrow costumes, Elizabeth Swann costumes, William Turner costumes, Hector Barbossa costumes, Davy Jones costumes, and Tia Dalma costumes. With everything from Elizabeth Swann's Aztec gold necklace to Jack Sparrow's rings and Barbossa's sword, pirate costumes offer many styles, sizes and choices for Halloween parties and contests.

In addition to licensed Pirates costumes, there are numerous unlicensed pirate costumes for women and men, and even kid's pirate costumes. These are likely to cost a little less that an official Jack Sparrow Halloween costume, but may be just as attractive and well-built.

Another perennial favorite: Spiderman costumes. Again, with three hit movies, the webslinger is available as adult Spiderman costumes, kids Spiderman costumes, and even a Spidergirl costume. "Spiderman costumes have been one of our best sellers for four years in a row," said James Burke, co-owner of SpookShop.com. "My sons both have Spiderman costumes, and wear them as pajamas, and even during the day. They have each gone through two sizes already."

Other hits such as The Simpsons movie are likely to bring more interest to Simpsons costumes. "We carry Simpsons masks and costumes, but expect manufacturers to add more Simpsons Halloween costumes to what they currently offer," Burke said.

Don't forget Harry Potter costumes. Unlike Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean costumes, Hogwarts Robes and accessories sell year-around. "Harry Potter scarves for the various houses have been a great seller," said Burke. "And we always have to reorder Harry Potter wands and glasses."

With other hit movies like Shrek the Third (with baby dronkey costumes), TVs "24" (with Jack Bauer costumes) and Barbie movies, Halloween costume stores are likely to again be full of licensed characters. Upcoming movies include Rob Zombie's remake of the classic movie "Halloween," which includes a new Michael Myers mask.

Look to the movies and TV to get great Halloween costume ideas. You'll have plenty to choose from!

Tunnels - by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams
