Harry Potter Pajamas - Why They're Very Hard, But Not Impossible, To Find

It seemed like such an easy thing at first. I merely wanted to buy my son some kid's pajamas depicting his favorite characters and images from the Harry Potter series. I thought I'd just pick some up at my local discount super center the next time I bought groceries. I had no idea how wrong this would turn out to be.

The problem was my son decided that he loved Harry and his friends after he read The Chamber Of Secrets over a summer when no Harry Potter film or book releases were on the horizon. The truth is, while it's possible to get your hands on Harry Potter kid's pajamas when a book or movie is being promoted, it's potentially difficult even then. And if you're looking for Potter pajamas for an adult or teen, it's even more difficult.

I soon found, after several special trips to and pleas with managers of discount stores, malls and specialty shops, that merchants do not regularly carry Potter items or pajamas until a new movie comes out and even then it's hard to swoop them up before the other desperate parents find out.

This creates a bit of desperation for parents of children who are wild about the wizards. I have even seen forums where parents desperate for Hogwarts or Hermione sleepwear were willing to buy the fabric and attempt to make them themselves. I am no where near this crafty.

What I've learned is that you really have two options. You can (and should) stock up on these pajamas when the books and movies come out. You should also make friends with the search options on your computer, because you'll need to pounce as soon as a rare pair of simple wizard pajamas becomes available on your screen.

Word Count in Children's Books - An Interview With the Writer's Retreat

This extract is part of an online interview which was undertaken with members of the Writers Retreat at the Institute of Children's Literature in September 2008. For more than thirty five years, the Institute has offered the premier writing course for adults interested in learning how to write and be published for children and teens.

Q: Many of the fantasy novels that I've seen for teens are very long. Is that a kind of requirement for teen fantasy? I have a novel that I'm working on but it's probably not going to be very long when I'm done and I worry that publishers are looking for those heavy tomes.

A: It seems that the Harry Potter series changed things in this regard and novels for both teens and middle grade readers got longer as a result. However, don't consider these longer fantasy novels as a benchmark of how long a book should be. Making a story a certain length just for the sake of it is a mistake. You still have to have a good story, which must flow properly, move along at the right pace and keep the reader engaged.However, having said that, it is far easier to write too much and then cut it down, than have to add in entire sections in the middle, or introduce entirely new characters and subplots.

Yes, many fantasy novels may be very long, but not all of them are. I'm not sure of the exact statistics, but most may be around 250 or 300 pages when in printed form, rather than possessing the mammoth word counts of the later Harry Potter novels. You should perhaps ask yourself if you are sure your story is for teens or is it middle grade, which are usually shorter, say around 150 pages at the most.Your novel may also well need to be tightened up during the editing process, which obviously reduces the size of the finished product.

Will Real Estate Prices Rebound?

After years of hyper appreciation, the last 18 months has seen a major cool down in the real estate market. Given this change in direction, will real estate prices rebound?

If you can wrap you mind around the idea a home is a product, you have a better chance of predicting when prices will rebound. Why? Well, it all comes down to inventory. When there is more inventory than demand, prices drop. When demand out paces inventory, prices go up.

At the moment, there is an absolute ton of inventory on the market and only modest demand. During the booming real estate market, developers where building homes as fast as they could. As the market cooled off, developers kept building like there was no problem. This has resulted in a glut of properties in most cities and high population areas. Developers are now offering very attractive deals to move the homes, but the market will not rebound till most of these are gone.

It is important to understand that inventory is important, but the number of houses sold is less so. If you see reports that the number of homes being sold is picking up, it is good news. That being said, it may not be great news. Such reports can be misleading because they do not take into account the reason a home is sold. If more homes are being moved because sellers are cutting prices, it does not mean that prices are on the rise again.

Will home prices rise again? Of course. You just need to be patient and watch the inventory.

Children and adults have been arrested by the saga of the boy wizard, Harry Potter, the boy who's made them laugh, made them cry, held their breaths in nail-biting and litmus-testing situations.

It's thus no surprise that J.K.Rowling, the creator of the boy who lives in the hearts of zillions of readers across the world, has attained star-status, though I'd support all those critics who opine that she deserves more of the acclaim stuff.

J.K.Rowling was a broke single mother as poor as possible in modern Britain without being homeless. She had studied something practical suppressing her dreams of becoming a writer. It was in a train in Portugal when she was struck with the idea of the boy wizard. And in a couple of years the idea became a book and then a series and now it's a legend. Why would anyone feel she doesn't deserve the acclaim she's received.

Many factors contribute to the success of a writer. It's hard to make it big as a fiction writer, primarily because the story-telling ability is rare. It's the ability to capture people's attention and arouse in them the curiosity to find out what happens in the end. J.K.Rowling is abundantly blessed with that ability. It becomes even more obvious when a critic or a pundit contemplates the background and sub-theme she's chosen. Story-telling ability encompasses the ability to get people to believe every element of the story no matter how impossible the existence of the element may be in the real world. This means fiction writers need to cross the barriers of suspicion and incredibility to become successful. J.K.Rowling's world of wizards and witches when spoken of plainly seems utterly boring fantasy. However, every reader of the books found the theme anything but fetid fantasy. While reading it, the world seemed to be an existent one. Images reeled in the readers' minds as though they were ploughing through real-life situations in the real world rather than made-up tales in books. They felt every emotion every character experienced in the stories. The books had traversed fantasy.

Compare it with other fiction centering on magicians and gnomes and goblins. Fairy tales, you may say. And I'd readily agree. For such books have only children captivated. But Harry Potter has captivated even octogenarians, who are way past their fairy-tale age. This is testimony to Rowling's story-telling ability. Though her books are as much fantasy as any other fairy tale, they have been passed up as fairy tales by the readers, plainly because readers love them. The idolization of Hero Harry by all age groups has made the Harry Potter series family books. Something every member can read and discuss over tea and snacks. The books are some of the few family books that have earned the approval seals as readable by children. They're some of the few books that have made phenomenal success without immorality.

Moreover J.K.Rowling has subtly appealed to the desires of people of all ages-the desire to be a hero, who transcends tragedy and defies evil powers.

Scrutinize the book for creativity and style of putting imagination to words. J.K.Rowling deserves accolades, as her books are resplendent with incontrovertible creativity. They're spiced with humour and wit even through tragic times. Her literary style is one to laud-it is rich yet understandable by even the commoners and non-bookworms. It's descriptive and one many aspirants love to imitate.

Everything studied and considered it becomes acceptable that J.K.Rowling has earned only what she deserves-nothing more, though perhaps less. Needless to mention, her background to her rise to stardom inspires many people to pursue their dreams, especially when dumped in times of failures and misfortune.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" was perhaps the most anticipated book ever. It certainly received a lot of media attention this year, before its release. The final book in the series, it was expected to provide an answer for all the many questions Harry Potter fans were speculating about. Would Harry survive? Would Voldemort win? What about Ron and Hermione - would they be alright? Would Harry and Ginny get back together? Was Dumbledore's faith in Snape justified?

I was amongst those who had pre-ordered the book to find out all the answers. It was with mixed emotions that I received it on the day of its release, because I knew that after this there would be no more Harry Potter novels to look forward to. Of course, that didn't stop me from settling down with the book immediately.

In this seventh installment of the series, we find Harry once more at Privet Drive, ready to say farewell to it for the last time. This year, he won't be a student at Hogwarts. He has a task to complete - he needs to locate and destroy the remaining Horcruxes. Harry being Harry, he is determined to go alone rather than risk the lives of his friends. Things work out a bit different than planned, and soon he is on the run from the dark powers of Voldemort with Ron and Hermione at his side.

Like most Harry Potter novels, friendship, courage and hope are at the centre of the storyline. As I followed the characters on their near-hopeless quest, I felt despair on their behalf and I do admit I shed a couple of tears when everything got very bad.

The grand finale of the book and the inevitable confrontation between Harry and Voldemort is like a tightly woven web. Everything comes together in the lead up to the conclusion, and I found myself satisfied with the way it turned out.

Afterwards, we catch a glimpse of the future and get to find out what happened to the various remaining characters. I found this to be a nice bonus and closed the book with a smile.

There are only a couple of negative sides to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", in my opinion. My main grievance is the editing. It feels rushed, there are quite a few errors and there are many run-on sentences. I spotted one sentence of more than 90 words in length. This could potentially cause difficulties for some readers. There were a few instances where I felt the lengthy sentences took away from the tension, especially at crucial moments in the plot. Additionally, there was a lot of repetitiveness in description.

The second "issue" I have is that there seem to be some inconsistencies in the plot. Some aspects do not add up. Perhaps, to a casual reader, this will be unnoticeable but the editor in me made me flick back several times and re-read paragraphs. This did somewhat hinder the overall reading experience.

For parents wondering whether or not this book is suitable for younger children, I would advise you to give the book a read first. There are darker moments and a few characters do find their end. Some of them are popular characters, which could cause some upset.

Overall, I did enjoy this installment and I would certainly recommend it to others. J.K. Rowling is an excellent author who knows how to hold a reader's attention. The plot is interesting and the characters are so believable you can't help but feel for them and care for their fate.

What Harry Potter Could Have Learned From Hamlet

Despite my best intentions, I have occasional brushes with popular culture. A few years ago, for example, I fell prey to the addictive tales of J. K. Rowling.

Rowling's story-telling is outstanding, but the conclusion of Rowling's complex tale in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, released about a year ago, was highly unsatisfactory. Now, after spending some time with Shakespearean tragedy, I'm in a position to explain why.

J. K. Rowling simply failed to respect the rules of tragedy. For six heart-racing volumes, the Harry Potter saga was shaping up as one of the grand tragedies in our literature. But in the end, Rowling lacked the intestinal fortitude needed to end her tale properly.

The rules of tragedy have been well understood since Aristotle laid them down 2,000 years ago, and I summarize them here, not intending to patronize any readers, but merely to refresh them on what they learned while studying Julius Caesar in ninth grade. A tragedy must, first, be a serious story about a conflict between a hero and a great malign force. In a tragedy, moreover, the hero must undergo a change of fortune, preferably because of his own mistake or flaw, leading to a disastrous, heart-rending denouement.

Consider Lear, that warrior king and grand personality, whose fatal mistake is to misjudge the characters of his daughters and to surrender his kingdom prematurely. With his world aligned against him, he loses everything. King Lear ends, oh so satisfyingly, with a stage strewn with corpses. Kent and Edgar, who survive, rule in Lear's place.

Consider Othello, that great general and a commanding figure, whose fatal weakness is to trust the sociopathic Iago and to allow him to plant fatal seeds of jealousy in his bosom. Weakened, Othello loses everything, and the play ends (once again, most gratifyingly) with blood and bodies everywhere. Gratiano, a minor character, succeeds to Othello's place.

Now consider Harry Potter, a hero among heroes, a wizard prodigy, a born leader and Quidditch captain, whose destiny is to battle the world's greatest wizard. Like Lear, Othello, and Hamlet, Harry has a fatal weakness: a powerful connection with Voldemort tempts him to the dark side. Harry flirts too closely with evil and, in a moment of ambition and weakness, betrays his friends. Too late, he repents, and the story ends with bodies (including his own) and wands broken and strewn over the great hall at Hogwarts. The wizard world starts anew; a minor character, Neville Longbottom, succeeds to the place in the world of wizards that Harry might have held.

Only, of course, that's not how J. K. Rowling wrote it. Because she lost her nerve plotting and writing the final volume, Harry never makes a fatal mistake, never loses his way, and rises safely and blandly from the wreckage of the final battle.

And so do Hermione and Ron. And so does practically everyone else. In fact, after all the hullabaloo and speculation by Potter fans over what would transpire, who among the Order of the Phoenix actually dies? An elf. The werewolf. The duplicitous Severus Snape. One of the Weasley twins (the twins do not have distinct personalities). Tonks (you probably don't remember who she was, either).

In fact, at no point in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - for that matter, at no point in the series - are readers called upon to deal emotionally with the deaths of any character they have truly come to care about, except Dumbledore, and his age and infirmity take the sting out of his loss. J. K. Rowling flinched at her final task, which was to break our hearts.

She even shrunk from disposing of her villains. What possible reason could Rowling have had for letting Percy Weasley live? When a character in a tragedy has lost his way and gone over to the enemy, he must perish, even if he has belatedly seen the light. J.R.R. Tolkien understood this; that's why the great warrior Boromir was slain at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring.

And why, oh why, does Draco Malfoy survive? In a properly staged final battle, Harry's arch-enemy would repent and, in a moment of high drama, would strike a critical blow on Harry's side. Then, having atoned for his earlier wickness, and in a state of grace, Draco would die fighting. At the very least, Draco should die at the hand of the Dark Lord, so as to punish his parents for their wickedness. But nothing of the sort happens. Readers are not even told what happens to Draco after Harry last encounters him.

Let there be no mistake: J. K. Rowling wanted to write a tragedy. She even attached an epigraph to the Deathly Hallows in the form of a quotation from the playwright Aeschylus, the father of Greek tragedy (died 455 B.C.). But when it came down to cases, she lacked the stomach for the tragic conclusion that her story deserved.

From the dark tone of the fifth and sixth books, we were fully justified in expecting that (a) the forces of good would, in the final conflict, sustain serious losses and (b) that even if the Dark Lord were defeated, the wizard world would never be the same. In The Lord of the Rings, for example, to which the Harry Potter saga owes much, the defeat of Sauron marked the end of an age and the departure of the elves from Middle-earth.

Instead, Rowling left readers in a wizard world where all was copacetic, where the survivors were happily mated up, and where their little wizard offspring were happily heading off to Hogwarts. Sentimental rubbish, and a good tragedy wasted.
